If you were lying in a
ditch on the side of the road and you had one last song to sing what
would it be?
“Tie Me at the Crossroads When I Die”
How many animals have you
hit with your car?
One pregnant doe. I was a wreck. Then one of the guys from Deliverance
came over and offered to tag it and butcher it.
Spent the night in a
Turkish prison?
No, but I did pay off a citation in Germany by selling blood at the
Düsseldorf hospital. I got extra pay because I wasn’t a junkie.
Did Mr. Rodgers freak you
out?
Those creepy puppets freaked me out. Lady Elaine Fairchild was a
nightmare in a dress. And who in their right mind names a children’s
television character “Mr. McFeely”?
Nah… joking aside, once I had children, I came to appreciate how
calming that show was for kids.
Which Apostle/Disciple
best depicts you?
Peter, the Build-Your-Own Apostle: just insert foot in mouth.
What is your depiction of
a perfect day?
New places to explore and adventures to be had. A few friends and a
nice wine. Music, sunset, warm breezes… and no bugs.
Describe your spiritual
journey so far.
Questions. Answers. Illusion. Disillusion. Arriving. Leaving. Returning.
What was one of the must
crucial points along the way?
On the bad side, a horrible experience with church-based gossip and
judgement that ultimately led to a nervous collapse and three-year
struggle with depression.
On the good side, a wonderfully affirming experience at the emergent
conference in San Diego with other weird Christians like me.
On the currently best side, finding the book The Artist’s Way.
How has Sojourn changed
your idea of what church is?
Rather than changing my preconceptions, Sojourn has begun to validate
what I’ve always thought church ought to be.
